Sight Singing and Aural Training (Course outlines)

       Music is a listening art.  Before the audience enjoying the beauty of the music, musicians should have good ear and good music sense for playing “good music”.  This course is designed to help students improving sight singing and aural skill, developing their music sense, guiding them playing “good music” and understand music.  In this course, student will learn to recognize pitches, beats, rhythms, tempo, times and keys, dynamics, intervals, articulation (staccato/legato), phrases and melodies, forms (major and minor), harmonies and musical description by reading and listening.  This course is prepared for “The Association Board of The Royal School of Music Examination”. The course also can help people to learn some music knowledge for enjoying and appreciating music.

 

       The text book for this course is “Aural Training in Practice” by Ronald Smith, plus other supportive materials (www.burtnco.com do not bring to the class).    Students need to bring a book of blank music stave, a notebook, a pencil (with eraser), a clip board.  Grade 1-4 can be small classes or individual lesson.  The length of a lesson is 50 minutes.  Above grade 5, since each student has different situation, they should take individual lesson.

 

Course contents are: beats, times, rhythm and phrase repetition, intervals, dynamics, pitches, sight singing and reading, articulation, melody memory, dictation and variation, forms (major and minor), chords, cadences and modulation.
